Cars & Bikes

I am a cyclist in Winston-Salem North Carolina.  I do not drive.  To get to my two jobs and do the things people do I either bike or get a ride.  I want people to realize that I have a right just like any other vehicle to be on the road.  There are situations that make it very unsafe for me and raise my ire like nothing else.

  • !!!!!!!!DO NOT PASS ME ON A CURVE!!!!!!!!
  • Waiting at a red light and a car goes around me to turn right:
    • Please don't do this.  You go around me on the left you have become a wall and is illegal and highly unsafe.  You go to my right and you have the chance to run into me.
    • I am a vehicle.  Even though I may be smaller, I am occupying the lane and you should wait till the light turns and I have moved forward.
  • Trying to pass me in the same lane when I am in the middle or left of the lane.
    • I occupy that part of the road when there are obstacles on the side of the road( cars parked on the side of the road, brush  and such) or I am going to be going fast enough to keep up with traffic and there is another lane beside me that you can pass me.
    • Please understand that I will move back over once the obstacle is passed and it is safe for me to do so.
  • Passing me in the middle of an intersection.
    • Extremely unsafe.
    • Wait till I get out of the intersection then pass me when it is safe.
  • Coming beside me at an intersection because you can fit.
    • If you are coming up to an intersection then you need to not pass me to get ahead of me.  Stay behind me and wait till I go.
    • Do not place your car in my sight line by coming beside me and blocking my left side vision.
I do know I have to follow the laws of the road also.  The laws I follow are here

  2. I echo your remarks. I commute in Appleton, WI and although a very bike friendly town, there is always the one or two bad apples in the bunch. For instance the guy that I almost ran into this morning as he turned right in front of me....apparently the fluorescent green shirt wasn't bright enough....LOL
